Welcome to Abington Park and Recreation Department

May 26, 2020
After careful consideration of all options and long discussions between the Park & Recreation Board, the Board of Health Agent and the Eager Beaver Directors, we have made the very difficult decision to cancel the Eager Beaver Program for this summer. This was not an easy choice to make but we felt it was necessary to keep our staff, community, and the children safe. Eager Beaver is meant to be a place where children can have fun with their friends, have freedom to be creative, and play. With the current guidelines needed to keep everyone healthy, it would be near impossible to follow protocol while still providing this environment at our facility.
We are remaining optimistic that we may be able to open Island Grove for swimming at some point this summer. If this is a possibility, the pool would be run in a very different way and there would still be many policies in place. However, we believe that having the pool open could be a beneficial “normal” activity for many Abington residents. Along those same lines, we are hopeful that as some restrictions loosen later in the summer, we may be able to keep some of the specialty camps open as well as run some single day activities with the counselors. Announcements will be posted on our Abington Recreation Facebook page and at abingtonrec.com once they are available. These programs running will all be based on the current guidelines.
We understand that this will be disappointing and sad news to many of our Eager Beaver families, as it was disappointing for us to make the decision. Now more than ever, children and parents need to see their friends and have some normalcy back in their lives. Our hearts go out to all the parents and guardians that have been juggling home schooling, jobs and play time with their children for several months. We know many of you were counting on Eager Beaver for some much-deserved relief and structure and we know many children were looking forward to seeing their friends and staff again.
Those who have already registered and paid, full refunds will be given. We ask that you please be patient as these are being processed. They will be done as soon as possible, and a check will be mailed to the address listed on your myrec account.
Although we will not see your faces at Eager Beaver this summer, we hope to see everyone at Island Grove and out in the Abington community. We will miss you all, but we will be back next year, and we cannot wait to see you all there!
